Data used for the paper Laorden-Camacho et al. (2026) accepted in Basic and Applied Ecology: Plant traits and soil organic matter quality drive fungal functional groups in shrub-encroached subalpine grasslands

This dataset documents soil fungal functional relative abundances along an increasing gradient of shrub biomass in at two locations in the European Alps: Lautaret (France) and the Stubai Valley (Austria). Sampling was done in 2021-2022. The dataset includes plot-level total shrub biomass (%), biomass per shrub type (%) and community weighted means of the relative abundance of soil fungal functional groups. The community weighted means (CWM) were calculated as the mean value under herbaceous patches and under shrubs weighted by their relative biomass.  for three different fungal funcional groups: arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF), ericoid mycorrhiza fungi (ERM) and ligninolytic fungi. Additional information of the plot such as site and shrub type is also given.
